The Girl is On Fire! Alicia Keys is Set to Debut Her New Graphic Novel in 2022

She’s giving us more and more to keep us “Fallin” in love with her. πŸ₯° After the release of her first novel, More Myself: A Journey in 2020, Alicia Keys is now set to release a graphic novel titled after her hit song, “Girl on Fire.”

The beautiful 40-year-old songstress is currently constructing a superhero themed comic starring a 14-year-old girl named Lola Wright — a queen that has telekinetic powers discovered on a fluke encounter when police draw a gun on her brother. The controversial case of mistaken identity causes the police to arm themselves against the innocent man thus throwing Lola into a frenzy of protection causing her to unleash her hidden powers.

Apparently, Keys came up with the idea of transforming the song into an artistic visual following her drive to illustrate a story about a girl acknowledging the strength within her that she has always had.

Illustrated by Brittany Williams and co-authored by Andrew Weiner, the graphic novel is scheduled to be released sometime next year.

New Comeback? Why Press-On Nails May Be Here to Stay

🎢 Hold up! Wait a minute. Let me put my press-ons in it. 🎢 Ladies, and gents πŸ˜πŸ’…πŸΎ, hold onto ya’ coins. There may be a way to keep your nails on point all the while saving you from a trip to your favorite nail salon. Why? Because press-on nails are making a comeback. Who would have thought that this trend, first becoming popular in the 80s, would reappear again a quarter of the way into the 21st century? Truth? Apparently, the spike in the press-on nail movement is mostly due to a courtesy of the pandemic as a result of the shut-downs and restrictions on retail businesses, mainly salons.

According to The New York Times, more women who have been getting their nails done regularly have been opting into simply pressing them on, spending a total of no more than $10 a box.

Now ten dollars versus spending $35 to $100 or more to get your nails done? You do the math. Aside from saving a ton of ching-ching, press-on nails have been getting more popular as celebrities like J-LO, Chrissy Teigen, and even Ariana Grande have all been rocking the fancy and easy-to-do nail look.

As press-on nails offer a stylish, alternative way to keep your nails fresh, it may be obvious why the new craze has been having us go crazy for more all the while keeping our money in our pockets.

African Hair Braiding Labeled a “Coronavirus” Hairstyle?

Oh no they didn’t! Unfortunately, yes they did. From the start of the pandemic, there have been reports from multiple sources that the Coronavirus has inspired a number of hair braiding styles in the East Africa region. The interesting thing? The hair styles inspired from this serious illness have seemingly grown in popularity from the time that the start of the COVID-19 pandemic first began to circulate early last year of 2020. The bad thing? There may be more of an even bigger negative connotation placed on those who wear the Afrocentric hairstyles — particularly for those who are Black.

The COVID braided hairdo, created as a way to bring positive awareness to the life-threatening virus, is aimed to help draw attention to the importance of cleanliness and safety practices for Coronavirus prevention. The fear associated with this idea is one that causes some to contemplate if others will get the wrong idea. According to an article from CNN, Ghanaian photojournalist and filmmaker, Carlos Idun-Tawiah, felt compelled to help set the record straight and clear the narrative of hair braiding being labeled a “Coronavirus hairstyle.”

As Idun-Taiwah explained, the art of braiding can be tracked back to 5,000 years in African culture. Therefore the history behind it is one that holds a high level of prestige.

It is understood why one would be motivated to use their creativity to shine light on an issue that has been the source of this global pandemic, however should it be through the illustration of hair being braided and mimicked to look like a SARS-CoV-2 viral spore?

Stars Cardi B and Yara Shahidi Glam Up With Inexpensive Make Up

Say what?! Who would have thought that two of the most glamourous stars on the planet use everyday ordinary make-up products that cost less than a total of $20 a pop? Word is that these two talented beauties, queen Cardi B, known for being one of the hottest rappers in the game, and the fabulous actress Yara Shahidi, known for her roles on Freeform’s Grown-ish, ABC’s Black-ish, and more, may be more like us than we think.

According to reports from POPSUGAR, both Cardi B and Yara Shahidi are confirmed to have used make-up and hair products that can easily be found in the ULTA store’s beauty aisles.

Outside of using hundreds of dollars in foundation, primer, bronzer, and concealers, what stands out the most are the two accessories listed below that helped Cardi B to complete her million dollar look at the 2021 Grammys this year — with products anyone can buy with a $20 bill.

Apparently, the lashes, retailed for only $12, and the hydrating lip treatment are two of the most inexpensive glam products that went into giving the rapper that WAP in her performance — see what I did there? 😏

She’s sophisticated, she’s chic, and apparently she uses hair products for less than $20 to achieve her top knots. Ain’t that something? POPSUGAR reported that the young actress uses the following items to keep her curls slick, moisturized, and on point.

Captain Underpants Author Revealed as a Racist?!

Say it ain’t so! πŸ˜«πŸ€¦πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ As if all the uproar about Dr. Seuss wasn’t enough, now it has been revealed that yet another author has been accused of depicting racist stereotypes within their popular children’s story. According to an article from the New York Times, the latest gossip in the book world is that the publisher, Scholastic, Inc., of the beloved “Captain Underpants” series pulled one of its most recent graphic novels from circulation due to claims that the book “perpetuates passive racism.”

Allegedly, it’s implied that the book in question, “The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future” included racist images and concepts that depict harmful, and even hurtful, forms of prejudice against the Asian community. Really Captain Underpants? πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ WTH?

Now, I have to admit although I have never been a fan of the “Captain Underpants” comic book series (stupid humor is so not my thing), I must say that there are a number of POC that I know and have heard of who truly enjoy reading these graphic novels. It’s sad and sickening, especially considering the given climate of the rise in violence and discrimination against POC (especially now with the attacks on the Asian community within America) that the creator of the series, Mr. Pilkey, would fail to be more sensitive, mindful, and culturally competent to create a book incorporating uplifting themes instead of one that would glorify negative connotations surrounding Asian people.

In an attempt to rectify the situation, Mr. Pilkey came out with a statement claiming, “I wanted to take this opportunity to publicly apologize for this. It was and is wrong and harmful to my Asian readers, friends, and family, and to all Asian people.”

Dear God. Is it too harsh to ask that if you choose to incorporate POC in your story that you do the appropriate research on what is deemed as acceptable before choosing to publish it?
